# Barrel Keeper — catalog sources & credits

## Catalog data (catalog.js)
- Reference catalog (~790 bottles, incl. ~360 craft-distillery bottles). Each entry tracks `msrp` + `msrpSource`, and tasting-note `notesSource` + `sourceUrl` when available.
- **American whiskey tasting notes:** primarily [Breaking Bourbon](https://breakingbourbon.com) in-depth reviews. Nose/palate/finish in the app are **short paraphrases** rebuilt from flavor descriptors found in those reviews (not verbatim copies). Tags are derived from the source review text.
- **Scotch / Irish / Japanese / Canadian / world:** paraphrased from Master of Malt / The Whiskey Wash / Breaking Bourbon / an official page where cited on the entry. **Correction (Oct 2026):** 41 entries previously carried descriptor lists attributed to generic “brand tasting notes” at brand homepages that had not actually been fetched; those notes/tags were removed (left blank), as were 29 “Common retail” prices with no checkable source. Laphroaig 10 keeps notes (official product page was fetched).
- **Prices:** Breaking Bourbon MSRP/SRP (with year), BRBNFNDR Benchmark MSRP (Apr 2026) for some allocated bottles, and Pennsylvania LCB 750ml shelf prices (catalog dated 2026-10-18) for many import expressions. State shelf price ≠ brand MSRP; the source string says which.
- Prices move; allocated bottles often sell above MSRP. Breaking Bourbon prices without a year in the review now carry the release year or the review's publication year.

## Craft distilleries (`craft: true`, `state`, `city`, `stateSource`, `stateUrl`)
- “Craft” = independently owned, in-house-distilling US producer (not a major group such as Sazerac, Beam Suntory, Heaven Hill, Brown-Forman, Diageo, Campari, Pernod, MGP/Luxco, Bacardi, Constellation, Proximo, William Grant, Rémy; not a pure sourcing brand). Judgement call; see `stateSource`/notes.
- Bottles, proof, age, mash bill, MSRP and paraphrased notes: Breaking Bourbon reviews (URL on each entry).
- Distillery state: taken from the Breaking Bourbon review text (“located in City, State”) or confirmed on the distillery's official site / Distillery Trail / Kentucky Bourbon Trail listing (`stateUrl`). Left blank where not confirmed (~14 bottles).
- **Florida:** St. Augustine Distillery official site + online shop (notes, 2026 prices, product images); Horse Soldier official shop (2026 prices, descriptions, product images); Timber Creek Distillery blog “Florida-made whiskey brands” (Apr 2026 — note: written by a Florida competitor) for Timber Creek, Palm Ridge, Firesides, Oceanside, Marlin & Barrel, Loggerhead, 30A; Flamingo Magazine (Nov 2024); The Whiskey Wash (Kozuba & Sons); Big Storm and Burlock & Barrel official sites; The Bourbon Flight / Visit Florida guides. Wicked Dolphin (rum) and Florida Cane (no whiskey found) are intentionally not listed.

## User photos
- Photos you take (Store snap, bottle photo on a catalog-linked bottle, or “Add photo” in a catalog entry) are resized to ≤480px JPEG and stored only on your device (IndexedDB `catphotos`). They override bundled/remote images for that entry, are included in JSON export, and are never uploaded anywhere.

## Bottle images
- **Bundled (`icons/catalog/`, `imageSource: wikimedia-bundled`):** freely licensed Wikimedia Commons thumbnails only. Author/license listed below.
- **Remote (`imageUrl`, `imageSource: official-remote`):** official brand/distillery product images (incl. St. Augustine Distillery and Horse Soldier shop images on their own Shopify CDN) loaded at runtime (not downloaded into the repo). `imagePage` / `imageCredit` name the official page. The service worker caches viewed remote images opportunistically (stale-while-revalidate; opaque responses allowed) so they can work offline after first view. On load error the app shows an initials tile.
- No copyrighted retailer photos are bundled or scraped into the repo.

## Real-world price guidance (typicalShelf / secondary / what-to-pay)
- **secondaryValue** (+ low/high range): primarily [BRBNFNDR Benchmark](https://brbnfndr.com/bottles/) dated snapshots (Apr 24, 2026; Weller Antique 107 refreshed Aug 26, 2026). Weller C.Y.P.B. uses [Bottle Blue Book](https://bottlebluebook.com/bottle/555/Weller) market estimate / recent auction sells (viewed 2026-10-19).
- **typicalShelfPrice**: set to MSRP only when BRBNFNDR market avg is within ~15% of MSRP (“usually at MSRP”), or to a control-state retail figure (e.g. NC ABC for Weller C.Y.P.B., effective 2025-02-01). Not invented store markups.
- **payGood / payFair / payHigh**: derived from the sourced secondary range (low / avg / high). Kept as data; since Oct 2026 the Store verdict is retail-first (≤ MSRP great, ≤ +20% fair, above retail) with resale as a second line.
- **allocated**: flagged when secondary ≫ MSRP on a sourced snapshot, or for known Buffalo Trace / Van Winkle limited releases with a cited source string.
- Blanton's Original: BRBNFNDR’s $103 figure is labeled unverified on their page, so it is not used. Secondary now comes from the [Bottle Blue Book](https://bottlebluebook.com/bottle/741/Blanton%27s) market estimate ($130–$150, latest auction sales 2026-02-01; midpoint $140 shown). Retail $55 comes from Bourbon Culture's Brown Book.
- **Bourbon Culture, “The Bourbon Brown Book 2026 Edition”** (published 2025-11-28), [link](https://thebourbonculture.com/whiskey-info/2026-allocated-bourbon-secondary-price-guide/). Single secondary values for William Larue Weller ($1275), Thomas H. Handy ($425), Eagle Rare 17 ($1350), Weller Single Barrel ($420) and Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye ($1050). Stagg Jr / Stagg are covered in a note.
- Oct 2026 corrections (`tools/prices-2026-10.js`): removed resale/MSRP values that had been copied from a sibling bottle. Affected: Larceny ← Larceny Barrel Proof; New Riff KSB ← New Riff Single Barrel; Wild Turkey 101 ← 101 8 Year; WT Rare Breed Rye ← Rare Breed bourbon; 1792 Sweet Wheat (2015) and Woodford Double Double Oaked (2017) ← current releases. Jack Daniel's SiB Barrel Proof Rye now uses its own BRBNFNDR rye row ($67, $57–$77). Stagg Jr's MSRP is restored to the 2017 review figure; the BRBNFNDR $62 was Stagg's.
- Oct 2026 catalog cleanup (`tools/dedupe-2026-10.js`): merged 36 duplicate pairs that shared one review (e.g. 1792 12 Year / 1792 Aged Twelve Years (2019)). Old ids are mapped in `id-map.json`.

## Barcodes
- UPC/EAN codes come from the **Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division “Iowa Liquor Products”** list, Iowa Data Hub dataset 1029 (as of 2026-10-01), licensed **CC BY 4.0**: https://data.iowa.gov/catalog/dataset/1029. They are matched conservatively by `tools/iowa-upcs.js`. Barcodes you link yourself stay on your device.

## Florida Hunt tab (`hunt-data.js`, checked 2026-10-19)
- Release windows are paraphrased from public pages: [Buffalo Trace Antique Collection](https://www.buffalotracedistillery.com/our-brands/buffalo-trace-antique-collection/), [Where’s My Juice BTAC 2026](https://wheresmyjuice.com/btac-2026), [Van Winkle 2025 press release (BevNET)](https://bevnet.com/pr/2025/09/11/the-van-winkle-family-unveils-2025-collection-with-a-rare-25-year-old-bottle-available-at-auction), [Courier-Journal on Birthday Bourbon 2026](https://www.courier-journal.com/story/life/food/spirits/bourbon/2026/09/02/old-forester-2026-birthday-bourbon-release/91545697007/), [Four Roses LE 2026](https://www.fourrosesbourbon.com/news/four-roses-set-to-launch-2026-limited-edition-small-batch-on-october-10), [Elijah Craig Barrel Proof](https://elijahcraig.com/barrel-proof) and the [ABC FAQ (The Vault)](https://abcfws.com/faq).
- Store links go to public pages only: theabcvault.com, abcfws.com, totalwine.com store-info pages and bourbonbossman.com. The app never logs in, scrapes or calls private APIs.
- Never treat secondary as a live quote; always show the source date. Missing data shows an explicit warning in the UI.

## Gap sweep (2026-10-19, `tools/add-2026-10-19.js` + `tools/additions-2026-10-19.json`, 105 bottles)
- 100 entries from Breaking Bourbon reviews (URL on each entry): proof, age, mash bill and MSRP/SRP with the review's year; nose/palate/finish are short paraphrases rebuilt from the review's flavor descriptors. Product-line entries built from one batch/release review (e.g. E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof Batch 14, Little Book Chapter 10, Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2026) say so in `notesSource`; proof and age vary by release.
- Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Private Barrel (Barrel Proof): Heaven Hill press release on the Max Homa pick (Mar 18, 2025) — uncut single barrels of Toasted Barrel; no national SRP, so no MSRP.
- Old Forester King Ranch Edition: Old Forester product page (notes) and PR Newswire press releases (2022–2024 SRPs). Legent: Beam Suntory launch release (2019 SRP) + The Whiskey Wash review (notes). Michter's 10 Year Bourbon: Michter's product page (notes; no MSRP listed). Very Old Barton 100 Proof: Bourbon Culture review (notes; no MSRP).
- UPCs for 43 of them from the Iowa ABD product list re-run (see `tools/iowa-upcs-report.txt` for the hand review). No new images.

## Green River lineup + Iowa ABD gap check (2026-10-19, `tools/add-2026-10-19b.js` + `tools/additions-2026-10-19b.json`, 77 bottles)
- All 77 from Breaking Bourbon reviews (URL on each entry), same method as above: proof, age, mash bill and MSRP/SRP with the review's year; notes are short paraphrases of the review's flavor descriptors; release-specific reviews are flagged in `notesSource`. MSRP left blank where the review only gives a 1 L or 375 mL price (Green River 1885, Green River Distillery Select, Ancient Age, Early Times BiB) or no year (Ten High).
- Green River: Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Wheated, Full Proof, Wheated Full Proof, Wheated Single Barrel, 1885, Honey Finished, Distillery Select Toasted Double Oak, U.S. Army 250th (Green River Straight Rye was already listed).
- The other 68 came from comparing the catalog with the Iowa ABD product list (bourbon, rye, Tennessee, bonded and single-barrel categories, 750 mL rows), keeping widely distributed bottles with a review to source from.
- UPCs for 49 of them from the Iowa ABD product list re-run (hand review in `tools/iowa-upcs-report.txt`). No new images.

## Fiddler, Wild Turkey audit + second gap pass (2026-10-19, `tools/add-2026-10-19c.js` + `tools/additions-2026-10-19c.json`, 44 bottles)
- ASW Distillery (Atlanta, GA) Fiddler lineup, 11 bottles: Wheated (formerly Fiddler Unison), Toasted Bourbon, Toasted Rye, Georgia Heartwood, Soloist, Antique, Combine, Steel Plow Rye, Chin Music, Big Green Egg, Encore. Sources: ASW Distillery's Fiddler page (https://aswdistillery.com/fiddler), ASW/John Deere press release via BevNET (2026), Bourbon Guy (2025), Bourbon Inspector (2024) and Whiskeyfellow (2024) reviews. Batch-specific proofs and ages are flagged in `ageNote`; Encore has no notes because ASW says they vary by finishing cask.
- Wild Turkey audit against the official products page (wildturkeybourbon.com): added Generations, Jimmy Russell's 70th Anniversary, Master's Keep Beacon / Triumph / Voyage / Bottled in Bond, Russell's Reserve 2003 (BevNET press release, 2020) and Russell's Reserve 1998 (Breaking Bourbon). MSRPs come from Wild Turkey press releases (PR Newswire) with their year. Wild Turkey 101 8 Year was already listed; it now has search aliases.
- Second gap pass, from official brand pages (notes paraphrased): Jim Beam Devil's Cut, Jim Beam Single Barrel, Maker's Mark 101, Old Charter 8, Old Charter Finest Oak, Isaac Bowman Port Finish, Devils River Bourbon, Jefferson's Reserve 8 Year, Jefferson's Triple Rye, Rebel Small Batch Reserve, Ezra Brooks Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Redemption Rye. From Breaking Bourbon: Blade and Bow, Breckenridge Bourbon and Rye, Bulleit Rye 10 Year, Buzzard's Roost (Very Small Batch Rye, Cigar Rye, Toasted French Oak), First West (Small Batch, Toasted Oak, Extra Aged), 15 Stars First West Rye, Calumet Farm Small Batch, Bardstown Bourbon Company Bottled in Bond.
- North Carolina ABC Commission retail price list (https://abc2.nc.gov/Pricing/PriceList) used as a second, Southeast-focused shelf list for gap checking. It is also used for dated `priceNote`s (NC retail, not MSRP), each linked to its item page. MSRP is left blank wherever no dated MSRP source exists.
- UPCs from the Iowa ABD re-run, with hand review in `tools/iowa-upcs-report.txt`. No new images.
